West Lothian has a particular concentration of asbestos-era construction. Livingston's designation as a new town in 1962 meant much of its original commercial, industrial, and public building stock was built during the peak asbestos years (1960s–1980s). Many of these buildings — schools, commercial premises, and housing — contain asbestos-containing materials in floor tiles, ceiling coatings, pipe insulation, and cement cladding.
